Jackie Coogan's pageboy
haircut was his trademark. At age 12, his boyhood ending, it was
cut off during the filming of "Johnny Get Your Hair
Cut." This movie was made at Tanforan Race Track (now
Tanforan Shopping Center), just south of San Francisco. While
the movie was being made, Jackie Coogan stayed at the St.
Matthew Hotel here in San Mateo (where I live). The St. Matthew
is still there, and until just a few years ago looked much as it
did in 1927. Only recently, with the insane price of real estate
in California, has it been remodeled. I think about Jackie
Coogan every time I drive by.
